Sales: The Life Skill We Rarely Teach

Sales is one of the most important life skills, yet it receives very little attention during our academic years. It is often viewed as something relevant only to business owners, entrepreneurs, or those pursuing careers in commerce.

This is a significant oversight.

Sales is far more than the exchange of products for money. At its core, sales is the ability to influence, persuade, and create value for others. In that sense, every one of us is a salesperson. The sooner we recognize this, the better equipped we are to succeed in all areas of life.

In the traditional sense, a sale occurs when a product or service is exchanged for money. To make that happen, one must present an offering, communicate its value, and convince the other party that it will benefit them. Only then does the transaction take place.

Now extend this idea beyond the marketplace.

  • A student makes a sale when they present their knowledge in a way that earns maximum marks from the examiner.

  • A leader makes a sale when they deliver a speech that inspires people to believe in a vision and take action.

  • A job applicant makes a sale during an interview by convincing the employer that they are the right person for the role.

...even a mother makes a sale when she persuades her child to finish a healthy meal instead of reaching for dessert.

Every day, we are presenting ideas, defending viewpoints, negotiating outcomes, and seeking support from others. In each of these situations, we are, in essence, selling.

This is why communication matters. Learn to tell stories. Learn to present your thoughts clearly. Learn to understand what others value and connect your message to it.

When you develop the ability to influence positively and ethically, you unlock a skill that serves you in school, at work, in relationships, and in leadership.

The magic of sales is not only in making money.

The magic of sales is in making ideas move from one mind to another.

And no matter what stage of life you are in, that is a skill worth developing.
