Imagine a block resting on the ground. In that state, it has little capacity to perform any useful work. (It may cause someone to trip over it, but that is hardly productive!)
Now suppose the same block is lifted and placed at a height above the ground. It then possesses Potential Energy, given by:
Potential Energy = mgh
where m is the mass of the block, h is the height to which it is raised, and g is the acceleration due to gravity.
This energy did not appear out of nowhere. It came from the work done by the agent that lifted the block—whether a person expending muscular effort or a machine consuming electrical energy. The effort invested has been stored as potential.
Human life follows a similar pattern. We all begin with untapped potential, much like the block resting on the ground. Through sustained effort, we acquire knowledge, develop skills, build discipline, and gain experience. Over time, we become capable of contributing in meaningful ways—as professionals, entrepreneurs, artists, athletes, leaders, innovators, or creators.
The key idea is simple:
Our potential—and therefore our value—is built through effort.
Just as the block gains potential energy when work is done to raise it, we increase our own potential when we invest time and energy in improving ourselves. To become more capable, more valuable, and more impactful, we must continually work on ourselves and strive to grow.
