E = mc²: We Are Made of Sunlight

E = mc² is perhaps the most famous equation in the history of science. It is so iconic that consulting firms, hotels, and countless businesses have borrowed its name.



This remarkable equation was proposed by Albert Einstein, where:

  • E stands for Energy

  • m stands for Mass

  • c stands for the Speed of Light


Einstein's insight was profound: mass and energy are two forms of the same thing. Under the right conditions, mass can be converted into energy, and energy can be converted into mass.

 

There is no shortage of books, videos, and articles explaining the physics behind the equation. So let's explore it from a different angle.

 

A Curious Question

 

When we are born, we weigh only a few kilograms.

As we grow, our mass increases. But where did that additional mass come from?

 

The obvious answer is: food.

But where does food come from?

 

Plants manufacture food through photosynthesis. To do this, they use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide.

 

Even if we eat meat, the animals we consume ultimately derive their nourishment from plants or from other animals that depend on plants.

 

Follow the chain far enough, and we arrive at the same source: Sunlight.

 

The energy from the Sun is captured by plants, stored in food, consumed by living organisms, and eventually becomes part of our bodies.

 

In a very real sense, the mass we gain as we grow has its origins in energy from the Sun.

 

A physicist may describe this through chemistry and biology. A poet may simply say:

We are made of sunlight.

 

The Hidden Activity Within Us

 

Our bodies may appear calm and motionless, but at the microscopic level, they are anything but.

 

Every second, countless chemical reactions take place within our cells. Atoms and molecules are in constant motion. Electrical signals race through our nervous system. Our hearts beat, our lungs expand and contract, and our brains process information.

 

Life is activity.

Life is movement.

Life is energy in action.

 

A Larger Perspective

 

One of the beautiful lessons from science is that nothing exists in isolation.

 

The sunlight that left the Sun eight minutes ago helps power life on Earth today. The food we eat becomes part of us. The energy we use enables us to think, move, create, and grow.
